Manager manager Marco Mazzieri has picked Tom Trebelhorn to coach third base for the Italian National Team in the World Baseball Classic.
The World Baseball Classic features players from 16 countries, with four teams each in four first-round cities — Tokyo, San Juan, Toronto and Mexico City. The tournament will be held from March 5 – 23, 2009. Quarterfinal competition will be held in San Diego and Miami, with the semifinals and finals to be held at Dodger Stadium on March 23.
Italy, Venezuela, Canada, and the United States make up Pool C, which begins play in Toronto on March 8.
Trebelhorn, 60, joins longtime Cleveland Indians, Baltimore Orioles and Seattle Mariners manager Mike Hargrove and former Major League catcher Mike Piazza as part of the Italian coaching staff.
Trebelhorn steered the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, Short-Season A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, to their third consecutive Northwest League Western Division title in 2008. The former Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs skipper compiled a 471-461 Major League managerial record.
