OK, blue, but that point could have been made a little more clearly.

As for Alomar - if I had a vote, he'd get it! (So would Blyleven, so would Morris...the guy was flat out a horse, and a stud at that, 1991 game 7 nuff said)

@KitchenSink -- True, it is a slippery slope of demanding a homogeneous result.

I think, however, that the OP was railing on the voter's cavalier attitude toward his responsibility and the inconsistency of his rationale from year to year.

And, yep, everyone has a right to an opinion, no argument there. But when it comes to explaining his reasons for why he voted the way he did, the call for a logical rationale is justified, don't you think? If he has serious statistical reasons for his voting choices, then we will have to all agree to disagree. But if he flippantly disregards the responsibility he has been given, then I think that opens him up to fair criticism.

Heck, by taking the time to read and post here, you have given more thought to the whole process than Mariotti ever has!

Wow, vitriol. The man has a right to his opinion. He obviously makes an ass of himself when he opens his mouth, but like Howard Stern clearly it's working for him. To my knowledge the BBWAA doesn't have any rules about qualifications or standards other than service time. It's up to that organization to police itself.

And do you really want to mandate that only the people who agree with each other and vote in predictable ways get to be counted? Sounds like a formula for a much less interesting and probably less effective HoF vote.

Mariotti is a moron!!!! All some sports writers, like that idiot, are trying to accomplish is some sort of 'I am more holy' than everyone ora that would suggest 'bugger eating, beer drinking, could not run a mile in a day' sportswriters somehow are the keepers of what defines greatness. Alomar - one of the 'best' second baseman in HISTORY ... let me say that once more ... ONE OF THE BEST SECOND BASEMAN IN HISTORY .... is that NOT the qualification that is required to get in the HoF. Did 'the Hawk" somehow become one of the greatest players to play the game (which is what the hall of fame is 'suppossed' to be after 9 years of not playing. Did Alomar and everything that he has achieved somehow not become worthy - all of the sudden - of being one of the best 2nd baseman ever to play b/c a over-weight, opinionated, has need seen a treadmill in at least a decade sportswriter decided so ??!?!?
It is everything that is wrong with baseball that the people that would flurish reporting on the scandal and relative lack of class of that is now baseball, would somehow see themselves fit to judge.

one word .. a 'joke'
