Animation Tribute to Dock Ellis and The LSD No-No by James Blagden

Artist James Blagden has provided a video tribute to Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Dock Ellis and his June 12, 1970 no-hitter against the San Diego Padres.

“In celebration of the greatest athletic achievement by a man on a psychedelic journey,” writes Blagden’s NoMasTv in its YouTube description.

The makers of the video hazard a guess that of all the 263 no-hitters thrown in the history of major league baseball, this is more than likely the only one pitched on LSD — though who knows how many have been hurled on steroids.

Dock Ellis passed away last December at the age of 63.

The audio comes from an interview Ellis had given with radio producers Donnell Alexander and Neille Ilel.

(Editor’s Note:  Dock Ellis was in the first class of inductees into the Baseball Reliquary in 1999.)

How the World Saw the World Series

The British media went wild this month with the Yankees World Series victory. Many writing about the Series for the UK press brought in the A-Rod connection:

“A season that started in turmoil ended in glory for the New York Yankees and their superstar hitter Alex Rodriguez,” wrote The Mirror.

“Alex Rodríguez comes full circle to help New York Yankees to World Series triumph,” read the headline in The Times.

The Sun remarks on Rodriguez’s “impressive form” during the post-season.

“Nine years without a championship may not seem like a long time for most sports franchises, but for the New York Yankees, it is an eternity,” typed The Guardian

And The Spectator brought in a political aspect to the win: “After eight long, gruelling years the Curse of Bush is finally lifted and the universe is once more on an even keel: the New York Yankees are World Series champions again. For the 27th* time. Hurrah!”

    Baseball, US, Cuba

The Associated Press asks in a headline this week whether baseball can help restore relations between the United States and Cuba.

“‘Pingpong diplomacy’ thawed relations between the United States and China in 1971. Can “baseball diplomacy” help do the same for the U.S. and Cuba?” the story begins.

A group of slow-pitch players from Massachusetts are now touring Cuba. Red Sox great Luis Tiant spoke to them before they went on their way.

It is now ten years since the Orioles made their heralded trip eastwards. And now there is talk of another journey by the team to Cuba.
